History
Furunäs Stud was founded in 1965 by my father Bengt Ohlsson, when he and my mother Rose-Marie bought the farm Furunäs, located about 15 km south of Kristianstad in Skåne. Me and my brothers Per-Ola and Jens grew up in this beautiful environment but I was the only one who followed in my parents footsteps, sharing their love for horses. At an early age, my brothers preferred the world of football.

Over the years, apart from Shetland ponies, we have also bred Swedish Warmblood horses, New Forest ponies and Arabian – New Forest cross breed ponies.
With regards to the Swedish Warmblood horses, I would like to point out the earliest ancestor on the stud, the elite mare Trixie 9773 by Toreador 418 – Toddhurst XX, from the famous Piledal bloodline (family 46) in Trelleborg in Skåne. Trixie was a half sister of the show jumping stallion Krocket 651. Her first offspring some 30 years ago was V65 Shoot (formerly called Trixon) by Utrillo 432, who became Swedish Champion in show jumping with rider Peter Eriksson and also won the Valörpokalen (The Value Trophy) among other championships. In the 80’s she got Trend by Gassendi 422, who because of his excellent movements won Swede Horse and was unbeaten during his dressage career with rider Jan Brink. A few years later, the stallion Maximilian by Martini 744, was born and later on exported to the UK.

Several successes have been achieved during the years to follow, with for instance two Breeders Trophy victories in show jumping. Tiffany, born in 1987 by Magini 695 – Kadrilj 573, won in 1993 both the Breeders Trophy and became the Sweden’s Show Jumper of the Year and later on 3rd in the Swedish Championships in show jumping with rider Rolf-Göran Bengtsson. The next Breeders Trophy victory came with Omar Sharif by Opius 855 – Brabant 448, who won as a five year old and the following year became the most successful Swedish bred horse at the Falsterbo International Horse Show and was rewarded the Stallion Owners Great Prize.

The Shetland pony breeding is however the basis for the success that have made Furunäs Stud famous, not only in Sweden but also abroad. The earliest ancestor on the stud, the mare Harviestoun Priscilla RS 7, by Harviestoun Habbie RS 4, out of Harviestoun Pepita SPSB 5134, was imported from England during the winter of 1964/1965. She carried a foal by Royal Sovereign SPSB 1716 and gave birth to the filly Pippilotta RS 153. Pippilotta later on got the filly Furunäs Petronella RS 654, by Rosolio of Transy RS 63, who became Elite licensed due to her many successful offsprings.

Petronella was the mother of two licensed stallions: 1988 she had Furunäs Fernando RS 258, by Rosafir of Transy RS 66, who twice has become Best in Show (BIS) and was rewarded 44 p. He has also shown his strong breeding qualities by winning the Major Stallion League for both 2002 and 2004 and become Elite licensed. In 1989 Petronella had Furunäs Bonzo RS 2699, by Onyx v. St. Geerhof RS 204, who also became Elite licensed.
Among Petronella’s daughters, I would like to mention the Elite mare Furunäs Petra RS 883, by Rosafir of Transy RS 66, who in her turn is the mother of the Elite mare Furunäs Paljette RS 1196, by Dulex RS 110, who became Mare of the Year in Sweden in 1984. Paljette remained unbeaten in the show ring and became the best Shetland at the Elite Horse Show in Linköping in 1987 as well as Champion Filly in Kävling the same year. In 1990, Petronella was sold together with her daughter Paljette to Hormesta stud.

In 1967, Priscilla had the colt Furunäs Pinocchio RS 58, by Lilleman RS 11. In 1975 he became Champion Stallion and Reserve BIS in Kävlinge. In 1968, his full sister Furunäs Pamela RS 343 was born. This beautiful mare, who was rewarded gold several times, had many excellent daughters. Two of them, full sisters by Rosafir of Transy RS 66, were rewarded Elite: Furunäs Pomona RS 824, born in 1976 and Furunäs Pandora RS 938, born in 1978.

These two mares also had excellent offsprings. The most successful was Pandora’s daughter Furunäs Panette RS 1313, by Dulex RS 110, who already at the age of three became Champion Filly and BIS at the National Shetland Horse Show at Strömsholm in 1985. Unfortunately, she passed away much too early.

Before she died, however, Panette gave birth to three foals; the licensed stallion Furunäs Sahib RS 243, by Gletness Rockall RS 155, and two beautiful daughters, the Elite mare SUCH Furunäs Paulette RS 1998, e. Rosafir of Transy RS 66 and the Diploma mare Ytterhalls Brusa RS 2353, by Skäpperöds Asterix RS 183. Sahib has become Champion Stallion and Reserve BIS with 42 p.
In 1983, Pandora had the son Furunäs Porfyr RS 222, by Galax RS 138, who has been very successful, both in breeding but also in the show ring.

In 1973, Priscilla had Furunäs Penny RS 653, by Rosolio of Transy RS 63. This beautiful mare started her career by winning gold in the class for two year old fillies in Kalmar in 1975 and finished it by becoming Champion Mare in Kävlinge in 1983. Unfortunately, she died already in 1984 but had by then had many promising offsprings.
Priscillas next daughter was born in 1976, Furunäs Patricia RS 825, by Rosafir of Transy RS 66. Patricia had several nice daughters, among them the Elite mare Furunäs Paulina RS 1372, by Dulex RS 110. Paulina in her turn has produced two licensed stallions (Gläntans Pirat RS 274, by Kärlingehults Orkan RS 176 and Gläntans Porjus RS 352, by Aramis RS 246) and three Diploma mares (Gläntans Petronella RS 3023, by Almnäs Origo RS 198, Gläntans Pilar RS 3408, by Gläntans Cross RS 249, and Gläntans Pingla RS 5417, by Gläntans Fogde RS 392). Patricia herself became Champion Mare at Bjärsjölagård in 1988.

In the early 70’s, we imported a mare from Denmark, Rita af Nörvang RS 264, by Suspect of Marshwood SPSB 1826, out of Rondo of Luckdon SPSB 5714, with the filly Rebecka af Nörvang RS 800, by Frans af Nörvang DK 67/147, by her side. Rita was very successful, not the least in the show ring. She became Champion Mare and BIS several times, for instance in Båstad in 1974 and in Kalmar in 1975. Rebecka also won several gold medals and was used in breeding at Furunäs for a couple of years before she was sold to the Sjöberg family in Klagstorp. They used her in a Four-in-hand team (horse & carriage), together with her daughters Furunäs Regina RS 1004 and Furunäs Rosita RS 934, both by Rosafir of Transy RS 66.
In 1973, Rita had the beautiful daughter Furunäs Ramona RS 760 by Rosolio of Transy RS 63, who later on became Champion Mare several times.
When Rosita in 1982 was exported to Finland, this bloodline left Furunäs Stud. It is with great pleasure, however, we have followed Rosita’s success also in Finland, where she later on became reserve BIS in Helsinki in 1984.
Over the years, we have used many different stallions at Furunäs. During the first 8 – 10 years it was mainly my grand mother’s (Asta Ohlsson at Hammarshus Stud) stallions Lilleman RS 11, by Kirkbride Beau RS 2, out of Sotlugg RS 110, Harviestoun Habbie RS 4, by Balgair SPSB 1403, out of Heleminta of Transy SPSB 4819, and Percy of Netherley RS 37, by Harviestoun Ringan RS 10, out of Harviestoun Polly SPSB 5468.
The major successes, however, came after we imported two excellent Transy stallions in 1972: Rosolio of Transy RS 63, by Hescott of Transy SPSB 1661, out of Rosira of Transy SPSB 4931, and Rosafir of Transy RS 66, by Rosethorn of Transy SPSB 1750, out of Rosemary of Transy SPSB 5504. Rosafir has probably been one of the most successful mare producers in Sweden over the years, only beaten by his son Furunäs Fernando RS 258, out of Furunäs Petronella RS 654.

For some years we also borrowed Roland Fransson’s stallions Dulex RS 110, by Ulex v.d. Mariapeel RS 34, out of Kirkbride Flake RS 97, and Galax RS 138, by Ulex v.d. Mariapeel RS 34, out of Horshaga Bally RS 26, and both these stallions produced some very good offsprings.
Dulex is the father of the successful mares Furunäs Polkette RS 1197, out of Furunäs Pomona RS 824, the Elite mare Furunäs Paljette RS 1196, out of Furunäs Petra RS 883, and Furunäs Panette RS 1313, out of Furunäs Pandora RS 938. Galax is the father of the Elite mare Furunäs Perlita RS 1435, out of Furunäs Penny RS 653, who was an excellent broad mare.
In 1983, we used Torsten Jeppsson’s (Almnäs stud) stallion Highball of Marshwood RS 165, by Fireball of Marshwood SPSB 1686, out of Duchess of Marshwood SPSB 6325. The result the following year was seven fillies of very high quality.

Furunäs Gazette RS 3983 (10 years old), BIS Rockelstad 2004
Naturally, Furunäs Fernando RS 258, by Rosafir of Transy RS 66, out of Furunäs Petronella RS 654, was a pleasure to use for many years, and produced many excellent mares. Also Furunäs Sahib RS 243, by Gletness Rockall RS 155, out of Furunäs Panette RS 1313, has produced many beautiful mares who have been successful in the show ring. One of these, Furunäs Melissa, out of Furunäs Filippa RS 3581, won gold at the age of two, and another one is the Diploma mare Furunäs Muzette RS 5351, out of Furunäs Gazette RS 3983.
Among the excellent elite mares, we have now come to Furunäs Pomona RS 824. One of her daughters, Furunäs Polkette RS 1197, by Dulex RS 110 is the mother of Super-SUCH and Super-Elite Furunäs Gazette RS 3983, by Furunäs Fernando RS 258, and Furunäs Heidi RS 3609, by Roy v. Bunswaard RS 184.
Furunäs Orchidé (3 years old), BIS Bjärsjölagård 2005
Furunäs Gazette RS 3983 has been very successful both in breeding but also in the show ring, with several BIS and reserve BIS titles, and been rewarded 44 p at the most. This has awarded her with both SUCH and Super-SUCH as well as Elite and Super-Elite.
One of Gazette's daughters, Furunäs Orchidé, by Jolly Roger of Marshwood RS 215, has won several Champion titles as well as a BIS title at the age of 3, with 44 p out of which 10 p for her excellent type.
Another one of Gazette's daughters, Furunäs Muzette RS 5351, by Furunäs Sahib RS 243, is one of the broadmares at our stud and became to our great joy as a 6 year old in 2006 Champion Mare and Best in Show in Rockelstad with 43 p which she repeated 10 years later in Rimbo 2016 by becoming Champion Mare and Best in Show at the age of 16, also this time with 43 p! Due to these achievements she has been awareded Super-SUCH.

In 1983, Pomona had the Diploma mare Furunäs Martina RS 1543, by Galax RS 138, who later on was exported to Norway. In 1992, Pomona had the Diploma mare Furunäs Elona RS 3080, by Plutus v. Dorpzicht RS 220.
In 1993, Pomona had the stallion Furunäs Fitzroy, by Furunäs Fernando RS 258, who was part of the four-in-hand team (horse & carriage) Ponny Expressen together with the stallions Furunäs Geronimo, by Furunäs Fernando RS 258, out of Furunäs Perlita RS 1435, and the full brothers Furunäs Gregory and Furunäs Irokes, by Furunäs Fernando RS 258, out of Furunäs Beatrice RS 2329. Furunäs Korona (5 years old), Fornboda winter 2003
In 1995, Pomona had the Diploma mare SUCH Furunäs Helena RS 4822, by Roy v. Bunswaard RS 1894. In 1998, Pomona had the daughter Furunäs Korona, by Roy v. Bunswaard RS 184, who later on became Champion Mare at the horseshow in Fornboda 2003. In total, Pomona produced 21 foals.

Pomona’s full sister, the Elite mare Furunäs Pandora RS 938 had the following offsprings at Furunäs before she left the stud: earlier mentioned Furunäs Panette RS 1313, by Dulex RS 110, Panette’s full brother Furunäs Porfyr RS 222, who became Champion Stallion at Strömsholm in 1998 and SUCH Furunäs Teodora RS 2000, by Lockinge Mason RS 83.
Furunäs Johanna RS 4622 (8 years old), BIS Riddarhyttan 2005
Teodora is the mother of SUCH Furunäs Johanna RS 4622, by Furunäs Fernando RS 258. Johanna became BIS in Riddarhyttan in 2005 where she was awarded 43 p!
The elite mare Furunäs Perlita RS 1435, by Galax RS 138, out of Furunäs Penny RS 653, is also the mother of a large number of foals. In the magazine Shetlandsponnyn (number 4 – 2000, page 16) there is an article about Perlita and her offsprings.

Some of Perlita’s successful offsprings are the Diploma mare SUCH Furunäs Cynthia RS 2775, by Gletness Rockall RS 155 as well as the Elite mares Furunäs Roxette RS 2004, by Gletness Rockall RS 155, and Furunäs Benita RS 2736, by Onyx v. St. Geerhof RS 204. We are very happy to have one of Perlita's daughters as a broadmare at our stud, namely the Diploma and Elite mare Furunäs Nicolita RS 5152, by Hormesta Erik Viking RS 325.

It’s worth mentioning that the Elite mare Furunäs Roxette RS 2004 in 1991 had the Elite mare Furunäs Duxette RS 3034, by Plutus v. Dorpzicht RS 220, who in her turn is the mother of the BIS mare Rossmons Daphne RS 5181, by Damit RS 270. In 1992, Roxette had the Diploma mare Furunäs Evelyn RS 3168, by Plutus v. Dorpzicht RS 220, who later on became the mother of the Elite licensed stallion SUCH Furunäs Jotex RS 378, by Furunäs Fernando RS 258.

In 1993, Roxette had the filly Furunäs Florette, by Furunäs Fernando RS 258, who at the age of 1 won her class with 42 points but was later on tragically killed by a train at a young age.

In 1994, Roxette had the Diploma and Elite mare SUCH Furunäs Ginette RS 3607, by Furunäs Fernando RS 258. In 1995 Roxette had the daughter Furunäs Henriette RS 5129, by Roy v. Bunswaar RS 184, who became BIS in Frillesås 2006 with 43 p! In 1996, Roxette had the Diploma mare SUCH Furunäs Isolde RS 4289, by Furunäs Fernando RS 258, hence, a full sister of Ginette, also she successful in the show ring. Roxette is also the mother of Furunäs Kitty RS 5029, by Furunäs Fernando RS 258, born in 1998, who became BIS in Köping 2006 with 44 p!
Furunäs Menuette RS 4973 (5 years old), BIS Rockelstad 2005
Furunäs Ginette RS 3607 is the mother of the Diploma mare Furunäs Menuette RS 4973, by Furunäs Sahib RS 243. Menuette became BIS in Rockelstad in 2005 at the age of 5 with 44 p! Another one of Ginette's daughters, namely Furunäs Lisette RS 5151, by Flagg RS 85 have been used as a breeding mare at our stud.
Furunäs Benita RS 2736 (14 years old), Axvalla 2003
Roxette’s half sister, the Elite mare Furunäs Benita RS 2736, by Onyx v. St. Geerhof RS 204, has also been very successful. Benita became BIS at the age of 15 in Nossebro 2004, where she was rewarded with 43 p. Her first foal, the Diploma mare SUCH Furunäs Florita RS 3580, by Furunäs Fernando RS 258, became reserve BIS at Bjärsjölagård in 2002.
Furunäs Irina RS 4635 (3 years old), Margretehof 1999
In 1996 her full sister was born, the Diploma mare Furunäs Irina RS 4635. Irina became BIS in Klippan in 1999 at the age of three.
Furunäs Pavlova RS 2003 (15 years old), Borås 2002
The Elite mare Furunäs Paljette RS 1196, by Dulex RS 110, out of Furunäs Petra RS 883, had in 1987 the chestnut coloured Elite mare Furunäs Pavlova RS 2003, by Gletness Rockall RS 155. Pavlova is in her turn the mother of the Diploma mare SUCH Furunäs Evita RS 3060, by Plutus v. Dorpzicht RS 220. Pavlova also had the daughter Furunäs Godiva RS 3606, by Furunäs Fernando RS 258, who is the mother of the Diploma and Elite mare SUCH Furunäs Kirova RS 4548, by Roy v. Bunswaard RS 184.
Furunäs Kirova RS 4548 (5 years old), BIS Strömsholm 2003
Kirova became BIS in 2003 at the winter show in Strömsholm. Kirova was the only pony that day to be rewarded 10 points for her excellent type.
Furunäs Bonnie RS 2331 (12 years old), Strömsholm 2001
Another mare that I would like to mention is the Elite mare SUCH Furunäs Bonnie RS 2331, by Onyx v. St. Geerhof RS 204, out of Furunäs Pensé Spar 38-85-7485. Covered by Fernando, Bonnie had three Diploma mares within four years; in 1993 she had the A-lcensed Furunäs Fergie RS 3582, in 1994 she had Furunäs Ginny RS 3985 and in 1996 she had Furunäs Irene RS 4280. All these mares have in their turn produced excellent offsprings.
Fergie is the mother of the licensed stallions Furunäs Nelson RS 444, by Hormesta Erik Viking RS 325, and Furunäs Rebell RS 537, by Furunäs Bonzo RS 269 as well as the Diploma mare Furunäs Umbria RS 6594, by Furunäs Bonzo RS 269.
Another thing worth mentioning is that Irene was awarded Best 3 year old Mare 1999 of all pony races in the Skaraborg county.

I never would have managed to put together the above history text without the help of my father. For a long time, he was digging into his notes and his own memories. Unfortunately he passed away in 2018 and we are doing our best to maintain the top quality Shetland breeding which my father built the foundation for since several decades.

A pony is awarded Elite based on the number of offsprings it has and their quality.
The point system works as follows:
The pony is judged based on the following five categories:
1. Type
2. Head, neck and body
3. Legs
4. Movements when walking
5. Movements when trotting
In each category, the pony can be rewarded a maximum of 10 points, i.e. each pony can get a maximum of 50 points.
The medals are rewarded as follows:
Gold Medal – between 40 to 50 points
Silver Medal – between 35 to 39 points
Bronze Medal – between 30 to 34 points
The Stallion League is based on the number of offsprings per stallion which have been shown at horse shows during the year and the average points of those offsprings.
A mare can be rewarded a Diploma at the age of three if she gets 40 points or more when shown at an assessment.
